Body Contouring After Significant Weight Loss or Gastric Surgery

Prior to losing a large amount of weight people are naturally focused on their weight loss goal and do not give any consideration to what shape their bodies will be in after their desired weight loss has been achieved. This is where body lift surgery may be beneficial.

As a result, whilst the outcome on the scales is gratifying, the presence of significant amounts of loose skin both look unsightly and can cause considerable discomfort when wearing clothes.

For these men and women, body lift surgery provides them with a shapely body to complement  their reduced weight.  There is a saying that ‘the bariatric surgery makes a patient healthy, but the body contouring surgery (body lift) makes them happy’.

That’s because you can’t exercise or shrink redundant skin after significant weight loss – it needs to be surgically removed.

Excess Skin Reduction Guide

Weight loss is an important step for becoming healthy and staying healthy. Numerous studies have shown that obesity–especially morbid obesity–can result in major health problems if not addressed, such as diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and certain kinds of cancers. After losing a lot of weight, you may find it necessary to visit with a  Melbourne plastic surgeon  to help improve your body contour.

Why Skin Remains Stretched Out After Weight Loss

When you gain a lot of weight, your skin will gradually stretch to accommodate the additional girth that you put on. This expansion can be rather extensive. When you lose that weight, the skin can only shrink and revert so far. This is just the nature of skin laxity and is actually normal. It’s for this reason that we offer  body contouring after major weight loss. These surgeries will help improve your overall body contour and give you a frame that is more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing.

Surgical Options to Consider for Body Contouring

There are many different surgical options to keep in mind when it comes to comprehensive body contouring. We can explain each of them when you come to our  plastic surgery offices in Melbourne, Victoria. Let’s go over some of the basic ones right now and how they affect different parts of the body.

Surgeries for the Breasts and Chest Area

The torso and breasts undergo many changes from major weight loss. It’s for this reason that many women who lose a lot of weight often undergo  breast lift surgery  and  breast reduction surgery. These surgeries will help tighten and firm the breast area. Reduction surgeries are also available for men whose chests sag or droop after surgery.

Surgeries for the Abdominal Area

The stomach is greatly altered by weight loss given how weight is distributed in a person’s body. A Melbourne tummy tuck  will help reduce the loose skin in the abdominal area and give you a much better body contour overall. The scar from the surgery can easily be hidden by most undergarments and bathing suits.

Surgeries for the Extremities

The trunk and belly are obviously affected by major weight loss, but you also have to keep in mind that the arms and legs can also be adversely affected. This is why people often get  thigh lift surgery  and  arm lift (brachioplasty)  to help address body contour. These surgeries can make all the difference for your overall appearance.

Surgeries for the Face

With major weight loss, you may also fin that your face and neck can be affected by loose skin. In such cases, a  facelift, brow lift, or neck lift  may be just what you need. These surgeries will reduce that loose skin and leave you looking more refreshed and energetic.

Body Contouring Plastic Surgery procedures can Vary from Patient to Patient

Some weight loss patients only need to target one specific area of the body in order to achieve their body-contouring goals. Others may need to deal with a number of problem areas, with the surgery spread over a number of operations.

A significant proportion of patients undergo many of the available major body contouring procedures in a number of operations, typically spread out over 12 – 18 months. This requires a huge commitment from the patient, but the results are truly life-changing.

The main body contouring procedures are:

1/ extensive liposuction

2/ lower body lift (circumferential ‘belt’ lipectomy’)

3/ upper body lift (breast lift, lateral chest/back reductions)

4/ brachioplasties (arm reductions)

5/ inner thigh lifting (reduction)

6/ face/neck lift

Mr. Maxwell will help you choose the procedure/s that best meet your  needs and will ensure that your goals are met safely and effectively.

What type of Body Contouring can i have?

The best results of body lifting/contouring by far are achieved in patients who have reached or nearly reached their ideal weight = Body Mass Index (BMI) of 20 – 30. But very dramatic improvements can be made in patients whose BMI is higher than 30.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared.

  • Normal: 20 – 30
  • Overweight: 25 – 30
  • Obese: 30 – 35
  • Morbidly Obese: >35

Lower Body Lift Plastic Surgery

The introduction of the circumferential ‘lower body lift’ (circumferential or ‘belt’ lipectomy in the late 1990’s revolutionised the surgical treatment of the massive weight loss patient.

The Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy) is a circumferential procedure consisting of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) in the front, and lifting of the buttocks and the backs and outer parts of the thighs. The buttocks in particular can be dramatically improved. Liposuction (Suction-Assisted Lipectomy = SAL) is often performed in conjunction with this procedure. The buttocks in these patients tend to be very flat in addition to drooping, and fat suctioned from other areas can be transferred (grafted) into the buttocks to produce a much more rounded and pleasing shape.

The Lower Body Lift can be combined with other contouring procedures   such as Brachioplasty, Breast Lift/Reduction/Enlargement, Lateral Chest /Back Skin Tightening (Wedge Lipectomies) and Inner Thigh Reduction also known as Inner Thigh Lift.

A Belt Lipectomy Procedure

A Lower Bodylift (Belt Lipectomy) can take up to 6hrs to complete. Liposuction has to be performed before the excess skin can be excised. The patient has to be turned from front to back half way through the operation. All the wound closures are performed with buried dissolvable sutures. Whilst the use of multiple suction drains has been standard for many years, more and more often Mr. Maxwell uses fewer or no drains which makes the post-operative recovery much easier.

At the end of the procedure a custom compression garment is fitted and worn for a minimum of 4 weeks (6 weeks if liposuction/abdominal hernia repair have been performed.)

Patients are encouraged to sit out of bed and walk a little on the first post-operative morning. A blood transfusion may be required to optimise recovery especially where the body lift has been combined with another contouring procedure. Discharge from hospital is around the 5th  post-operative day. If drains are used and are still draining at the time of discharge, the patient may go home with the drain tubes in-situ, or remain in hospital until the drainage has ceased.

Once at home, walking is encouraged but more vigorous exercise and heavy lifting are held off for 8 weeks post-operatively.

3 – 4 weeks off work are usually required.

Upper Body Lift

This term includes breast rejuvenation surgery (reduction/ lift/ enlargement/gynaecomastia treatment in males) and tightening of the sides of the chest and back if required.

Some practitioners include arm reduction surgery (brachioplasty) in this grouping.
