Breast Enlargement Surgery (Breast Augmentation using Breast Implants or Fat Transfer)
Breast Augmentation Surgery (Enlargement using Breast Implants or Fat Transfer/Fat Grafting methods)
If you’re like a lot of women, the thought of getting breast implants (or fat grafting) – to enlarge or shape your breasts – can be both scary yet exciting at the same time. These feelings about breast enlargement surgery are perfectly natural. However, it remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed around the world, and both implants themselves, and the techniques used to insert them, have come a long way since they were first used over 50 years ago.
When you get a breast augmentation, you’ll essentially be changing your breast size, chest proportions, side profile of your body, and potentially also your nipple locations.
Changing this area of your body will change the way you look, as a whole person, in that it will change your overall body balance or proportional differences. In other words, your chest area AFTER your breast augmentation procedure will impact your overall physique from the front and side; although with a natural looking result from Mr Richard Maxwell, a Specialist Plastic Surgeon, not everyone will be able to tell you’ve had breast enlargement.
The good news is that out of the women who undergo breast augmentation each year, up to 98 percent claim the results of breast enlargement surgery either MET or EXCEEDED their initial expectations.
Implants have come a long way in recent decades. Now, there’s even a possibility that the fat grafting option may soon become a more predictable, and more viable option, for breast enhancement (currently, fat grafting is still evolving, with some risks many patients and Surgeons feel uncomfortable in taking; and another reason fat grafting hasn’t quite taken off yet as a popular procedure is that it doesn’t tend to get the degree of augmentation that lead women to seek breast enlargement surgery.
Presently, some of your best options for breast augmentation are quality implants from Allergan or Mentor, in a number of shapes, profiles and sizes. Women and Surgeons now have over 400 different options for implants; and Mr Maxwell only works with quality implants, not cheap ones, to help you have a long lasting and natural-feeling breast surgery result.
Research indicates breast augmentation surgery can do more than increase your bust size.
Here are some of the potential benefits of having breast enlargement surgery (breast implants)
As the popular saying goes, when you look good – or rather, BELIEVE you look good – you tend to feel your best. So does having breast enlargement help?
Self-confidence may get a boost when you feel better about how you look. In an article in Clinical Psychological Science, plastic surgery was potentially linked to higher self-esteem.
We believe this may be linked with the fact that if a person is very unhappy – even obsessively distracted by – an area of their body or face (such as a crooked or humped nose, or tubular breasts), and these are corrected with cosmetic surgery, people may:
- feel less self-conscious
- become less likely to be teased about their appearance
- may become more confident believing a ‘noticeable serious flaw’ was remedied – whether the feature was initially a ‘flaw’ or not – it’s the individual’s preferences and interpretations that matter most in cosmetic surgery procedures.
The research also reported that patients were happier with their bodies as a whole, not just the area on which they had cosmetic surgery performed
Other studies have shown that people who hold a distorted, or extremely poor body image – or have very unrealistic expectations about surgery – might NOT benefit from surgery or have higher self esteem, as surgery does not fix psychological issues.
It’s thereby very important to discuss your breast enlargement surgery expectations and learn what surgery can – and cannot – do for you, by speaking with your Surgeon AND with other professionals if you are worried about other aspects of your life.
Remember, surgery is NOT a cure all for life’s problems. That noted, it still has some benefits when the right procedure, right implant, and right Surgeon work with a suitable candidate for breast surgery – so if you want to learn more, call and schedule a consultation with Mr Maxell in Hawthorn East. He’s an honest and highly skilled, very experienced FRACS qualified Plastic Surgeon with extensive cosmetic surgery expertise in a range of breast, body contouring and face, eyelid and nose surgery procedures. Sex Life Satisfaction: does your sex life change after breast augmentation surgery? How it might impact a relationship
Before we discuss this sensitive issue of sex after surgery, it’s important to keep in mind that EVERY single patient, and couple, are different.
No 2 individuals will have the same exact responses to a surgery, or body change – including breast augmentation surgery.
How you feel about YOUR body DOES however, tend to impact how your FEEL about being intimate with a partner, or having sex. For some women and men, the breast is an important part of love making; for others, not so much.
You may lose some sensitivity in that area, as well – perhaps just initially but it might be long term – so keep that potential risk in mind; as if your breasts are a big part of your sexuality, you may have to weigh up the risks of lost sensitivity (but this doesn’t happen to everyone), with having larger breasts you really like.
Online Cosmetic Surgery Communities: The Digital World Of Plastic Surgery Discussions
Online Forums about Sex After Breast Surgery
RealSelf.com, for example, is an online cosmetic surgery community for women and men to share their cosmetic surgery experiences or “surgery journeys” to learn more about the cosmetic & plastic surgery outcomes of others.
Meanwhile, 7 in 10 surveyed women indicated that their sex life satisfaction improved after undergoing one of these breast enhancement procedures.
With patients seen in our Clinics, who get enlargement using implants, or a breast lift after pregnancy or breast feeding have taken their toll on the breasts – we DO hear this sentiment a lot.
It seems to us that if patients feel great about themselves and their newly enhanced bodies after cosmetic breast surgery/breast enlargement or a breast lift, that seem to feel and act more confidently in all aspects of their lives.
This of course includes their intimate relationships.
It is very IMPORTANT however, that you choose surgery ONLY to please yourself – never to please or attract another person. You are the one who has to go through the experience, the healing period and live with the results for the rest of your life (although implants can be removed or removed or replaced). So make the decision carefully and consider all your options and the risks involved.
(Ask one of Mr Maxwell’s Patient Care Advisors for a TOUCH MD information on breast augmentation surgery).
Surgery is serious, so just remember that before you choose to enlarge or uplift your breasts.
When surgery is chosen based on how you believe it will help you feel about how you look – and if you get a result you feel suits your body and what you wanted – this can help with confidence.
Remember, however, that some aspects of surgery cannot be controlled or predicted, so keep your expectations realists.
More active social life once you get your breast implants? It’s possible.
If you feel your current breasts are not attractive, or are distorted or out of proportion with your body (e.g., tubular breasts, asymmetrical breasts or hardly any breasts), you MAY find yourself less secure in certain outfits (swimwear) than others around you.
Or you might feel shy or fear being teased about not having a lot of breast tissue. It’s sad that people bully others on appearance, but people DO this, and it’s never fun.
But if this leaves you less likely to go out or engage socially, then you may find your new body leaves you feeling less self-conscious.
To become less self-conscious means you are likely to become MORE confident. Confident people naturally interact more with others, and attract more friends and a busier social life. There are no promises for this, of course, but it is possible and we do see this with some of our patients.
Body Balance and Your Physique: Your Breasts, Your Waist, Your Figure
Breast augmentation/breast enlargement surgery can help women of many different ages achieve a more balanced physique.
It can help you get fuller, firmer breasts and cleavage.
Having a wider or protruding breast area can also enhance the contours of your waistline, giving you a curvier, more flattering figure than a straight-looking figure. What’s ideal is, however, always up to you.
Your torso dimensions MAY have an impact on how the augmentation looks, in terms of the harmony of the overall physique.
Breast Lift or Augmentation with Age: Turn Back the Clock a Bit
Sagging, drooping breasts are an often inescapable process of ageing or of recovering from pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If your nipples point ‘downwards’, it can leave you looking older than you are – and older than you feel inside.
Breast surgery (usually a breast lift or combined breast lift with implants), can often correct breast droopiness and restore breast firmness, improve breast shape and ‘relocate’ the nipples to a more central area of the breast.
You’ll find you can get firmer, perkier or more voluptuous breasts again, if you have an augmentation or a breast lift – or both, combined. Mr Maxwell will help you understand what will get you a good result, taking into account the levels of:
- breast skin laxity
- existing breast tissue
- what size and shape you feel will suit you best
Along with feeling you look younger when you have firmer, more uplifted breasts, a lot of women feel more feminine, too, after breast surgery.
Breasts or cleavage that appears more shapely and firmer is important to many women, who identify their breast area with part of their sense of femininity or sexuality.
Every one is different, however, so this may or may not apply to you.
Wearing the Best Fashions after Breast Enlargement Surgery – The Wardrobe Makeover
One of the biggest advantages to breast augmentation surgery is generally the amazing wardrobe change that occurs after the recovery is complete.
Prior to getting breast implants, many women may not be fully comfortable with wearing t-shirts, swimsuits, gym wear, strapless or spaghetti strap dresses or lower-cut blouses. This can be an issue when, for example, there’s a formal event or wedding and you’re asked to wear an outfit that isn’t going to flatter you – and may actually fall off or need ‘bra stuffers.’
With breast augmentation, and a natural looking breast size that suits your overall frame (height, weight, BMI), you may find your fashion choices go through the roof. Just remember to wear a good, supportive bra at all times after your surgery. You may be tempted to go bra-less, especially if you’re young – but please DON’T go bra-less. Your new breasts need support to have a long-lasting effect and prevent premature drooping – so wear a GOOD support bra at all times.
Potentially increased opportunities
Beauty and appearance are NOT superficial attributes according to our genetic preferences and brain wiring. We DO care about appearance. And in our lives, it may matters more than you might think.
A Psychology Today article suggests a person’s physical appearance plays a factor in everything from getting a partner, to getting hired for a job or even promoted. People who ‘look good’ often command higher salaries. It’s not fair, per se, as they may not be more skilled at all – but it shows us that appearance IS important to many of us. Not all, but many. And that’s more than a cultural aspect of our lives, it is actually something in our genetic evolution that indicates symmetry and balance are the more appealing genes. (If you’re interested in this topic, do some research, it’s absolutely fascinating).
Confidence can also change after surgery, often for the better. Everyone is different and there is no guarantee. In general, however, having more confidence leads people to become more pro-active in finding a new job, a new partner or even travelling or trying a new course or a new hobby.
Good Posture After Breast Enlargement Surgery
Being more confident or more body-proud DOES change the posture. Many patients stand up straighter after breast augmentation surgery.
If your breasts are too large or heavy, it can have a detrimental effect on your posture, so be sure to choose an implant size that is ‘reasonable’ and not too large. Mr Maxwell is an expert at helping people envision what their breasts will look like after augmentation surgery, so you’ll get a sense of this either using bra sizers or possible 3D imaging as well as looking at before and after photos of breast enlargement surgery.
Breast Plastic Surgeons often note the same postural improvements with breast reduction surgery patients (i.e., better posture). So it may be that when YOU feel body-proud and body confident about your chest area or bra cup size, you suddenly stop scrunching over in an attempt to hide that area or draw attention away from that part of your body.
Will Breast Enlargement Surgery or a Breast Lift Improve Your Life if you have small, asymmetrical or droopy breasts?
How much impact your breast enlargement surgery has on your life is really up to you and what you expect from it.
Keep your expectations realistic, and discuss these in-depth with your Surgeon and patient care team so you stay grounded throughout your journey.
Discuss your size and shape preferences as well as if you want any surgery to alter the nipples (this is usually an additional procedure if desired, or part of a breast lift surgery or breast reduction).
You are likely to feel a surge in confidence, gain more fashion choices and gain appearance-self esteem after having breast enlargement surgery; but every person is different.
